Senior Robotics Engineer

Ever break your cell phone? Sure you have! Ever wonder what happened to it after you traded it in for a new one? That's where we come in! Our team builds advanced robotics to analyze millions of phones to see just how messed up they are. Smashed screen? Check. Failed camera? You bet! We already have dozens of tests that we run on every device that we see, and we now need to take it to the next level because things are always changing.

We're looking for a smart, staff or senior-level engineer who wants to build end-to-end solutions. You'll interface software that you write with electronic and mechanical systems in the robots. No hardware experience? No worries. We'll build on your college education (BS/MS in CS or EE) and/or your five-ish years of software experience (Python/Node/modern script) to help you succeed in this role.

What's in it for you? Hopefully more than just a paycheck and some great benefits. We could use a lot of buzzwords like "fun", "exciting", and "rewarding" just like everyone else, but you don't know us at all so why should you believe our ad? Give us a shout and five minutes of your time. It's the only way to know if we can make those buzzwords come true for you.

Apply today by sending your resume to ron.bell at apkudo.com.

What you own (responsibilities)

Your days and duties will vary as we are growing and changing rapidly. However, your primary job will be to:

  • Use Python to support critical systems for our custom software and robotic hardware platforms. (e.g., Cosmetic Grading, Audio & Camera testing, and other triage functions performed by robotic systems)
  • Debug and/or reprogram applications to enhance system functionality and throughput.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues in an Ubuntu Linux Desktop environment.
  • Enhance and maintain custom hardware components built within Arduino Teensy General Purpose I/O (GPIO)
  • Work with our Engineering, R&D, Program, and Product teams to improve our internal and external customer experience with our custom automated lines and workstations.
  • Use AWS CloudWatch to monitor and diagnose issues, and build alerts to notify stakeholders in real-time of issues occurring.
What you bring (experience and qualifications)

We know there are many paths to performing well. We hope you will come up to speed fast and deliver great work. We think this would be hard to do without the education and/or successful experience in the following areas:

  • BS in Computer Science or a related field. A Master in Computer Science a plus. Relevant experience may substitute for and/or augment relevant degrees.
  • 3+ years of experience working in a production environment (robotics and warehouse automation interest desired)
  • 3+ years of Python (or another scripting language) experience and interest in designing, implementing, debugging, and testing hardware and software for user-facing applications.
  • Experience in Arduino, Ansible, Docker, Linux tool development, or similar products.
  • Intrinsic motivation, positive energy, sound communication skills, and a proactive and results-oriented outlook.

If you think differently and know that you can do the job well, apply and show us!

What we expect from everyone:

What does it take to be successful with us? We expect ourselves and each other to:

  • Put people first (by helping others be at their best-and making sure we are, too)
  • Communicate clearly (by speaking candidly, regularly, and respectfully to everyone)
  • Own our work and the outcomes (by taking personal ownership to deliver on the commitments we make to our colleagues and our customers)
  • Trust and be trustworthy (by acting with integrity and providing excellent work for each other and our clients)
  • Value everyone’s voice (because it’s all about the best ideas-not bureaucracy).
What you can expect from us:
  • 4 weeks of time off every year. Most of it doesn't roll over because we know we won't use it otherwise - and we know using it makes us better at our work and to each other.
  • Flexible working hours and schedules (some positions-like this one-will do some on-call weekend work on occasion, but we expect you to take time off during the week to make up for it)
  • Casual dress
  • A company-paid Google Pixel phone or a monthly credit to apply for your tech needs (including upgrading your bandwidth)
  • 12 paid holidays, including Juneteenth and the day after Thanksgiving
  • A monthly wellness stipend that you can use for things like a meditation app, standing desk, gym equipment, etc.
  • 401(k) matching up to 4%
  • Up to $5,250/year for certification, continuing education, and tuition reimbursement.
  • Insurance coverage we’re proud of for you, your family, and your spouse or domestic partner. We pay 100% of the cost of coverage for you for vision (through VSP), dental (through Guardian Dental), and some medical plans (through United Health Care, the largest health insurance company in the U.S.).
  • HSAs, FSAs (health care, dependent care), and commuter benefits to reduce what you have to pay for these parts of your life
The fine print:

You also must be able to travel as needed (roughly 0-5% of your time). Potential travel locations include customer sites in and around the DFW area, Nashville, Baltimore, or to other sites as we grow. In general, this is not a travel-centric role.

The physical requirements include prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer (though you can use the tech benefit to create whatever desk style works best for you).

We are an agile organization, and so the duties and description of this role (like every other at Apkudo) may change at any time as we adapt.

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
